Motorcycle Accident Statistics

National Motorcycle Statistics:

  • Motorcycles made up nearly 3% of all registered vehicles in the United States in 2006 and accounted for only 0.4% of all vehicle miles traveled. But they account for 11% of all national traffic fatalities, a 3% increase from 2004.
  • Bikers are 16 times more likely than those in passenger cars to die in a motor vehicle crash.
  • Motorcycle riders are about 3 times more likely to be injured than those in passenger cars.

Pennsylvania Motorcycle Statistics:

  • In 2006, total Pennsylvania motorcycle crashes increased 7% from 2004, while fatal motorcycle crashes increased by about 22% from 2004.
  • In 2006, there were 3,889 motorcycle crashes in Pennsylvania. That’s an increase of 268 from 2004.
  • There were 185 fatal motorcycle accidents in 2006, up 33 from 2004.
  • Of the 187 deaths in 2006 involving motorcycle drivers or passengers, 179 (95.7%) were drivers and 8 (4.3%) were passengers.
  • After Pennsylvania repealed the mandatory helmet law in 2004, the death rate from head injuries from motorcycle accidents increased 32%. The number of riders hospitalized for traumatic head injuries from motorcycle accidents increased 42%.
  • Two years after the repeal of the mandatory motorcycle helmet law in Pennsylvania, there was a 53% increase in traumatic brain injuries.
