Riding Under the Influence

Who drinks and drives more - Car drivers or motorcyclists? According to the Motorcycle Safety Foundation (MSF), it is more common for motorcyclists to drive under the influence of alcohol and drugs than car drivers.

The MSF also claims the use of alcohol and drugs by bike operators is contributing to an increase in motorcycle injuries and fatalities.

Motorcycle licensing laws are also coming under scrutiny, since many states allow riders to operate a motorcycle for years with only a permit. An estimated 14% of motorcyclists are not licensed, according to the MSF. Additionally, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration says 24% of fatal crashes in 2003 involved an unlicensed motorcyclist.
