Required Minimum Bodily Injury Coverage for Motorcyclists in Washington

  • $25,000 per person injured in any one accident and $50,000 for all persons injured in any one accident

Required Minimum Property Damage Coverage for Motorcyclists in Washington

  • $10,000 for injury or destruction of property of others in any one accident

Optional Motorcycle Insurance Coverage in Washington

Underinsured Motorist (UIM) Coverage. In Washington, UIM includes UM, and it must be offered to those purchasing new motor vehicle liability insurance policies. In cases of a policy renewal, an insurance company is required to offer UIM, unless the insured previously rejected this coverage in writing. When an insurance company elects to write motorcycle insurance, it must provide UIM information to prospective insureds. Except as to property damage, UIM coverage must be in the same amount as the insured's third-party liability coverage.

Personal Injury Protection (PIP). This coverage is required to be offered to those purchasing automobile insurance policies. It must offer minimum personal injury protection coverage for each insured, subject to certain limits and benefit maximums, as follows:

  • $10,000 in medical and hospital expenses, subject to a maximum benefit of $35,000
  • $2,000 for funeral expenses
  • A minimum income continuation benefit of $10,000, limited to $200 per week; subject to a maximum income continuation benefit of $35,000, limited to $700 per week
  • A minimum loss of services benefit of $5,000, limited to $200 per week; subject to a maximum loss of services benefit of $14,600.

Special Rules for Washington State Motorcycle Owners

Motorcyclists in Washington state are not required to carry bodily injury coverage. If, however, such coverage is purchased, the insurance company writing the policy must provide UIM information to the prospective insured. The insurance company, however, is not required to offer PIP coverage to motorcyclists.
