Traumatic Brain Injury from a Motorcycle Accident
Every time bikers throw a leg over, they immerse themselves in an
independent and liberating experience. But a traumatic brain injury can
steal away that independence in a flash.
How Brain Trauma Happens
The brain serves as the control center for all bodily activities, but it
can't control the random chance of motorcycle accidents. With or without
a helmet,
a biker can be vulnerable to serious brain injury.
Traumatic brain injury (TBI) and brain damage can result from an open
head wound such as skull fracture or penetration occurring when the
head hits a hard surface. Closed head injuries can lead to brain trauma
when there is a rapid acceleration or deceleration of the head, like in
the case of being rear-ended in a car accident.
Symptoms of Traumatic Brain Injury
If you, or someone you know, hits their head in a motorcycle accident
and exhibit any of the following symptoms or exhibit any other unusual
behavior, a traumatic brain injury may have been suffered. Even if you
remotely suspect a traumatic brain injury, you should immediately go to
an emergency room or see another health-care professional.
Possible symptoms of traumatic brain injury - whether the TBI occurred
from a closed head injury or from a fracture or penetration of the skull
- include:
