Road Burns and Scrapes from Motorcycle Accidents
For many motorcycle riders, the feel of the road – its twists and turns,
bumps and holes – is the ultimate adrenaline booster. Unfortunately, the
road can be dangerous.
How Road Rash Happens
Motorcycle accidents often lead to injuries involving road burns, road
rash, and scrapes. Bikers can sustain these injuries if they are thrown
from or dragged by their bikes.
Road burn or road scrapes result in the loss of skin from areas that
come in contact with the ground, leading to serious infections of the
skin, bones, joints, or the entire body.
Types of Road Burn Injuries
-
Avulsion Injury: A scrape that removes all layers of skin. Fat
and muscle may be seen in a full-thickness.
-
Compression Injury: Bruising or crushing injuries usually
resulting when a limb is caught between 2 objects.
-
Scrape Requiring Stitches: Cuts involving an open wound may
need stitches and may increase the risk of infection.
