Emotional Trauma from motorcycle accidents

Being a victim of a motorcycle accident is a traumatic experience both physically and emotionally. Sometimes, while physical injuries are beginning to heal, emotional injuries may still looming or may just begin to surface.

Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder

Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is an anxiety disorder that can develop after experiencing or witnessing a traumatic event. It is unclear as to why some people experience PTSD and others do not.

PTSD usually develops within 90 days of the trauma, but may take longer to develop. According to the American Psychiatric Association, symptoms last approximately 3 months in about half of those who get PTSD. Others may experience symptoms that come and go over several years.

Common symptoms of PTSD include:

  • Recurring, intrusive, and distressing memories of the event (e.g. flash backs, panic attacks, etc.)
  • Avoiding situations that remind you of the event.
  • Becoming emotionally numb and withdrawing.
  • Difficulty sleeping and concentrating, and fearing for your personal safety.

Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) Treatment Options may include:

  • Counseling
  • Medication (e.g. Antidepressants, anti-anxiety)
  • Talking to family or friends about the event. Or, encouraging the victim to talk about the event.
  • Maintaining a healthy lifestyle - exercise, proper nutrition, proper rest
