Bone Fracture Injuries from Motorcycle Accidents
Many bikers enjoy the feeling of freedom while cruising on the open
road. Unfortunately, that doesn't always involve freedom from motorcycle
accidents and injuries.
Motorcycle Accidents Lead to Broken Bones
A bone fracture is often the painful result of a motorcycle accident. A
closed fracture occurs if a bone breaks but does not break through the
skin. An open fracture occurs when the broken bone breaks through,
poking out of the skin.
Signs of a Bone Fracture
-
A snap, crackle, or pop was felt at the time of the injury.
-
Pain that increases with movement or pressure.
-
A grating feeling or sound with movement.
-
Injured area looks misshapen, twisted, or bent.
-
Injured area feels numb and tingly.
-
Limited movement in the injured area.
-
New movement that occurs where there is no joint.
-
Swelling and bruising within 30 minutes of the injury.
-
A bone pokes through the skin or a wound.
Treatment of Fractures from Motorcycle Accidents
An untreated shattered or broken bone may cause long-term pain, limited
movement, and deformity. To heal properly, a health professional may set
a bone in proper alignment and apply a cast or splint. A fracture may
also require internal fixation with pins, nails, metal plates, or screws
to stabilize the alignment.
